Security Service Edge for Dummies: What is Security Service Edge?

It’s called the security service edge (SSE) by Gartner, and it’s a mix of network security services. It delivers from a cloud platform. SSE is a part of the secure access service edge (SASE) framework because its architecture focuses on security services. The three main services of the secure service edge are:

Using a cloud access security broker, you can keep people from getting into SaaS and cloud apps that they don’t own (CASB)

Zero trust network access makes it hard for people to get into private apps from afar (ZTNA)

What has made it important for SSE?

As a growing industry trend, SSE solves the most important problems that businesses face regarding remote work. It includes the cloud, secure edge computing, and digital transformation. SaaS, IaaS, and other cloud apps make data more spread out outside on-site data centers. In addition, more and more people are mobile and remote, which means they can connect from anywhere, over any connection, to their cloud apps and data.

  • It’s hard for legacy technologies to keep up with connections between users and cloud apps. It is because they’re stuck in the data centre.
  • When users’ traffic is sent to a data center through a traditional VPN for inspection, everything takes longer.
  • Traditional data center approaches are costly because they require time and money to run and maintain.
  • VPNs are easy to get into because there aren’t any patches to fix them.
  • To make things even worse, today’s data center security stacks have grown into complicated, hard-to-integrate collections of point products. This makes it more likely to be gaps between different security systems, which increases the risk of more advanced threats or ransomware attacks.

What’s the difference between SASE and SSE?

In the SASE framework, network and security services use together in a single, cloud-based way. SASE solutions focus on improving the user-to-cloud-app experience while cutting costs and complexity. Networking and security are important parts of these solutions. Two ways to look at a SASE platform: 

The SSE slice focuses on making all security services work together, like SWG, CASB, and ZTNA. In the other slice, called the WAN edge, the goal is to do this for networking services like software-defined wide area networking, WAN optimization, quality of service (QoS), and other ways to improve the way cloud apps are routed.
